Sunshine, Vitamin D, and Fresh Air

Fresh air and sunshine are essential for of healthful living.   Exposure to glorious sunlight is the first response for obtaining Vitamin D, a vitamin responsible for so much that makes our bodies tick.  That includes proper functioning of the metabolism, hormones, thyroid and adrenal glands.  It is necessary for bone strength and an effective immune system.  And don’t forget putting you in a good mood.

Open Air Therapy, The Open Air Factor, The Healing Sun, Heidi and Clara Mountain Air Cure, are terms which remind us fresh air and sunshine are also critical in recovery from many ailments and infectious diseases.  The practices of putting patients outdoors, and designing hospitals for maximal ventilation and sunlight were in swing at the time of the Spanish Flu.

“Put simply, medics found that severely ill flu patients nursed outdoors recovered better than those treated indoors.  A combination of fresh air and sunlight seems to have prevented deaths among patients; and infections among medical staff.  There is scientific support for this.  Research shows that outdoor air is a natural disinfectant.   Fresh air can kill the flu virus and other harmful germs.   Equally, sunlight is germicidal and there is now evidence it can kill the flu virus.”

Vitamin D Deficiency

Whereas scurvy and beriberi are diseases caused by vitamin deficiency, COVID-19 could arguably be considered a disease facilitated by vitamin deficiency.  Scurvy is prevented by adequate supply of Vitamin C (famously of limes and cabbage); beriberi is prevented by adequate supply of Vitamin B-1 (known in seeds and nuts, beans and legumes).  So COVID -19, is proving to be largely avoidable with adequate supply of Vitamin D and elements that help its synthesis.

“Evidence from observational studies is accumulating, suggesting that the majority of deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 infections are statistically attributable to vitamin D insufficiency and could potentially be prevented by vitamin D supplementation. Given the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic, rational vitamin D supplementation whose safety has been proven in an extensive body of research should be promoted and initiated to limit the toll of the pandemic even before the final proof of efficacy in preventing COVID-19 deaths by randomized trials.”
